Coccyx injury.
An unsuccessful fall (for example, from a tree, from a ladder), a traffic accident, riding on vibrating (shaking) means of transport (bicycle, ATV, etc.) can cause injury to the coccyx (bruise or fracture).
A coccyx fracture (tailbone fracture) is a more complex injury (especially if the fragments have been displaced), but it is rarely complete, rather incomplete or in the form of a crack.
Fracture of the coccyx does not make itself felt except as a pain symptom at the time of taking a sitting position, when walking.
If you do not seek help in time, callus forms at the edges of the debris, which complicates diagnosis, treatment and leads to chronic pain. Since the coccyx is still an extension of the spine, displacement of the fracture can injure nerve fibers and cause pinching, which can be difficult to correct and even cause paralysis.
To diagnose a coccyx injury and differentiate symptoms from other diseases, an X-ray examination is performed in two projections, and to clarify the diagnosis, MRI.
Treatment of a coccyx fracture consists in reposition of fragments (if displacement has occurred), fixing the fracture in a motionless state. It is recommended not to take a "sitting" position for the entire period of treatment, refrain from having sex, not attend workouts and do not carry out any exercises affecting the body and lower extremities. With severe pain symptoms, pain relievers are prescribed. Coccyx treatment is carried out on an outpatient basis, unless we are talking about an old fracture, the restoration of the integrity of the coccyx, which requires a hospital. In difficult cases, surgery is performed.
The group of people at risk of getting this injury includes mostly children and the elderly. In children, the risk of a coccyx fracture in a fall is associated with an insufficiently formed strength of this skeletal formation. Elderly people are at risk of getting a coccyx fracture when falling due to age-related changes in the structure of bone tissue, decreasing bone tissue and fragility of the bones of the skeleton due to poor absorption of calcium and phosphorus with age.
