Chalazion - what is it?
Chalazion (translated from Greek - "small nodule") is a tumor-like formation that develops due to blockage of the excretory duct of the meibomian gland (or several meibomian glands) located along the edge of the eyelid and providing eye moisture.
The duct of the meibomian gland becomes clogged, and the secretion produced by it begins to accumulate at the outlet of the duct of the gland, causing inflammation of the tissues of the gland itself and the eyelid. Edema, swelling of the eyelid develops, but unlike barley (which is caused by blockage of the sebaceous glands and infection), the chalazion does not cause painful sensations (soreness is felt only at the beginning of its formation). Chalazion develops slowly (a week or more). Chalazion sizes can vary from a millimeter in diameter to the size of a pea.
The causes of chalazion are often associated with microtrauma of the eyelid area on which the eyelashes are located, abnormal growth of the meibomian glands, skin diseases affecting the surface of the eyelid (rosacea, seborrhea) or hypothermia. Sometimes chalazion develops as a continuation of barley, conjunctivitis, blepharitis.
Chalazion can resolve on its own, and the accumulated content comes out, but most often a certain treatment of the chalazion is required , which is carried out in a medical institution.
In simple cases, anti-inflammatory ointments or an injection of anti-inflammatory drugs (corticosteroids) are used, which gradually reduces the inflammatory process over 6 to 10 days. An injection is made into the chalazion area from the inside of the eyelid.
In cases where the chalazion reaches an impressive size or recurs, a surgical intervention (small incision) is performed in order to cure the contents of the chalazion. Curettage (curettage) is performed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The operation to remove the chalazion is not considered difficult, the healing takes place within one week.
You should not treat the chalazion at home on your own, since hot compresses, squeezing and similar manipulations can complicate the course of the disease, lead to the development of a purulent infection and serious surgical interventions in the eye area.
