Sugar in any of its manifestations is a breeding ground for saccharolytic bacteria that live in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract. But not all saccharolytic bacteria are good for the body. Among them there are representatives of conditionally pathogenic microflora, which increase their colonies in sweet nutrient media.
When they talk about the destructive effect of sugar on teeth, they mean, of course, not the substance glucose itself, which is part of most sweet foods, but those microorganisms that survive and multiply in a favorable sugar environment, using the remains of sugar for their needs.
Growing populations of microorganisms - those with a sweet tooth destroy tooth enamel, support the processes of decay in the interdental spaces, provoke purulent processes with microtraumas of the mucous membrane, inhibit the healing and regeneration processes, deepen in the area of the periodontal pockets into the layers of the periosteum, operate there, causing inflammation and tissue destruction, which violates stability teeth, destroys the alveolar processes and gives a lot of painful troubles to a person.
Staphylococci, streptococci, eubacteria, peptococci, peptostreptococci are the culprits of inflammation of the oral mucosa, toothache and tooth loss.
Precisely because of the "joint" consumption of sweets by bacteria and humans, it is necessary not to chew gum with added sweeteners after each meal, but to brush your teeth with pastes and rinse your mouth with elixirs specially designed to destroy harmful bacteria - sweet tooth. And it also doesn't hurt to get rid of the bad habit of using sugary lollipops to freshen the breath, because fresh breath and bacteria are incompatible things.
