Do I need to remove extra teeth?
Extra teeth (or supernumerary teeth) in humans are quite common and belong to one of the types of abnormal development of the dentition, called "hyperdontia". The presumed reasons for the appearance of extra teeth are the splitting of the dental plate of the embryo into more primordia than necessary. Supernumerary teeth can appear in both milk and permanent bites, which occurs most often. Usually the superset grows incisors, canines, premolars, less often molars. Sometimes supernumerary teeth are impacted and are found only on X-ray.
The growth of extra teeth can cause trouble when it changes the established structure of the dentition, wedging between the teeth, shifting their position, which violates the aesthetics and leads to anomalies in the bite. Extra teeth create additional conditions for the accumulation of food debris, do not make it possible to thoroughly clean the dentition from plaque, thereby provoking the reproduction of conditionally pathogenic microflora and the development of periodontal diseases, gingivitis, and caries. Often, the location of extra teeth away from the dentition causes chronic trauma to the tongue, cheeks (abrasions, abrasions).
Extraction of extra teeth is not always indicated, but only in those cases when their presence in the oral cavity causes inconvenience and harms the health of the remaining teeth. Before deciding to remove a supernumerary tooth, the doctor assesses its condition, functional significance in the present and future tense. In the case when a supernumerary tooth takes the place of a permanent tooth that has not erupted in time, but at the same time has a stable root, an anatomically acceptable shape, and a permanent tooth that is late to erupt is inferior in certain characteristics to a supernumerary tooth, then a supernumerary tooth is left.
Excess teeth can play an important role as a support for prosthetics. And if they meet the requirements for abutment teeth, then in such cases the extra teeth are also left unchanged. If the doctor decides to leave an extra tooth for the future, it is necessary to more carefully approach the dental care procedure at its location.
