How to get rid of puffiness under the eyes?

The problem of puffiness of the eyes has visited at least once any person, regardless of gender and age. Edema under the eyes, even if it does not cause pain, is unpleasant in that it changes the appearance, the contour of the eyes, and does not make it possible to cosmetically camouflage this defect in any way.

To get rid of puffiness under the eyes, it is necessary to know the reasons for the development of this kind of puffiness, and by acting on the reasons, we can expect effectiveness in removing edema.

Most often, swelling under the eyes is observed after sleep or prolonged horizontal position of the body. This is due to the fact that excess fluid (and it is present in the body if there are problems with the urinary system, poor work of the sweat glands, metabolic disorders, hormonal disruptions) enters the tissue by effusion from the vascular system (seeps through the microscopic openings of the vascular walls) and is distributed in interstitial spaces (where it can easily penetrate).

When a person is in an upright position, the liquid is distributed over the interstitial spaces more evenly, part of it is released along with sweat, part moves towards the lower extremities, but with a horizontal position of the body, the periorbital region of the eyes (the space between the skin and the eye sockets of the skull) also takes part in the reception of excess liquid, fills and looks like bags under the eyes. In addition, metabolic processes during sleep are slow, the urinary system does not often signal the need to visit the toilet, sweating also slows down, and against this background, excess fluid accumulates in a slightly larger amount than during wakefulness. It is these phenomena that cause some swelling of the face after sleep.

Swelling under the eyes can be the result of both chronic or acute current diseases, as well as a harmless reaction of the body to certain factors.

The harmless causes of eye puffiness include:

  • Tears shed the day before;
  • Excessive use of salty foods (smoked, canned, and the like);
  • Night or evening hobbies for tea drinking or other types of drinks (beer, plain water, sweet carbonated drinks, medicinal mineral water, alcohol, juices, compotes),
  • Eaten at night in large quantities of fruits and vegetables rich in liquid (watermelons, melons, juicy peaches, citrus fruits, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc.).

Less harmless factors that cause eye puffiness include:

  • an allergic reaction to cosmetics (creams, tonics, makeup remover milk, decorative cosmetics);
  • medicines, the side effects of which include tissue edema;
  • swelling resulting from a blow to the face.

And swelling under the eyes is not at all harmless, appearing regardless of the time of day, the presence or absence of salty foods in the diet, regardless of the amount of fluid consumed. Such persistent edema indicates that the metabolism is impaired, the organ systems cannot cope with the excretion of fluid, and special adequate treatment is required.

To get rid of eye edema that is not associated with complex dysfunctions of the body, you must:

  • cancel the cosmetic used for facial care;
  • if you suspect an allergic reaction, take an antihistamine;
  • talk with your doctor about changing medications that cause swelling;
  • carry out cryo-treatment of the skin in places of edema (apply ice compresses, which will cause vasospasm and give impetus to metabolic processes responsible for the removal of fluid from the interstitial space);
  • in itself, an upright position of the body in a few hours will lead to a decrease in edema.

The edema resulting from a blow is associated with the onset of inflammatory processes in the tissues, and such edema is removed with special anti-inflammatory drugs, the use of each of which is discussed with a traumatologist.
