Crocodile Tears and Crocodile Tear Syndrome
.A fairly common expression "crocodile tears" in various languages has a figurative meaning, indicating the insincerity of a person shedding tears for the troubles of another or sympathizing with the troubles of another.
In nature, the phenomenon of crocodile tears is associated with the peculiarity of the structure of the glands in the crocodile, the excretory ducts of which are located near the eyes and, when chewing food, secrete excess salts, and it seems that the crocodile suffers from lacrimation.
In medicine, there is "crocodile tears syndrome" - an unpleasant condition for a person with such a rather rare pathology.
With crocodile tears syndrome, a person at the time of chewing rough, tough food, regardless of his desire, suffers from profuse lacrimation. This condition is observed when there is a pathological connection of the branch of the facial nerve with the lacrimal canal.
This pathology can be a congenital anomaly in the structure and running of the branches of the facial nerve, the outcome of trauma or inflammation, insufficient recovery of the facial nerve after lesions (neuralgia of the facial nerve, paresis, mechanical trauma, etc.).
Crocodile tear syndrome is treated surgically. Branches of the facial nerve are blocked at their junction with the lacrimal glands.
