Why did the nails turn yellow?
Nails, like skin, hair and teeth, are indicators of the health of the body. Trace elements and vitamins that a person receives from food maintain a normal structure of nails, a healthy look (pink color of the nail plate, white color of the edge of the nail, the nail plate is even).
In terms of structure, the nail plate is not monolithic; it consists of many layers of keratinized cells, arranged like a tile. It is for this reason that the nail plate can absorb fluids, which are capable of influencing its structure.
Poor-quality nail polish removers (chemical solvents) and varnishes of bright colors (containing chemical dyes) are partially absorbed into the thickness of the nail plate, staining and sometimes deforming the nail cells. This is one of the simplest external causes of yellow nails.
Another reason for yellowed nails can be the use of medications: tetracycline antibiotics, analeptics and other drugs, the side effect of which is a discoloration of the nails.
Bad habits (smoking) can cause yellowing of the nails on the fingers holding the cigarette.
Handling household chemicals without gloves or picking (cleaning) walnuts can cause nails to turn yellow.
All of the above reasons why the nails have acquired a yellow color can be canceled, which will allow the nail plate to renew itself over time (about three to four months) and restore its previous healthy appearance.
But there are internal reasons - diseases, as a result of which the nails turn yellow. Onychodystrophy, psoriasis, mycoses, endocrine disorders, vitamin deficiencies, lack of trace elements can cause yellowing of the nails and require treatment. Not all diseases are treatable. This applies to hereditary diseases, systemic diseases.
What can be done to treat yellow nails:
- Eliminate external factors that cause yellowing of nails,
- Conduct analyzes for the quantitative composition of vitamins and minerals in the body,
- Identify endocrine diseases and conduct corrective therapy courses,
- Provide timely supportive therapy for incurable diseases, to maintain them in remission.
Whitening agents that will help to reduce the yellowness of the nails to some extent: hydrogen peroxide, lemon juice applications.
