Poisoning by poisonous plants - first aid.
The passion for growing ornamental plants at home can sometimes turn into a serious health problem. As a rule, indoor plants are people from countries with hot climates and exotic nature. But it is worth remembering that the natural habitat of such plants has endowed them with a propensity for protection from animals. Plants have a defense mechanism against being eaten by wild animals, which manifests itself in the poisonous properties of the structure of the plant itself. Therefore, poisoning with poisonous plants is quite real.
The juice of a plant can be poisonous when a leaf is torn off, a flower is plucked, a stem is broken. Pollen of a plant can be poisonous, which can cause skin injuries, both local and general effects on the body as a whole (allergies, paralysis).
Of course, every sane person is unlikely to taste the fruits, flowers and leaves of a houseplant, but children can bite off a piece of the plant out of curiosity and get poisoned. Adults are not immune from poisoning either, who, when replanting plants, cutting off dry leaves, trimming crowns, do not observe personal safety measures - do not wear gloves and do not cover their eyes and respiratory tract with protective equipment.
Accidentally splashed juice, shaken off pollen, caught on the open mucous membrane of the eyes, mouth or nose can not only externally injure tissues, but be absorbed and cause severe poisoning. In addition, many indoor plants exude odors that can harm not only the respiratory system, but the nervous system.
What to do if you feel unwell as a result of communication with a beautiful flower or wonderful leaves?
First of all, it is necessary to call professional help, as an antidote may be required to neutralize the toxin that has entered the gastrointestinal tract, on the skin or mucous membranes. You can take the following measures yourself:
- If an unfamiliar plant enters the digestive tract, induce vomiting by drinking a liter and a half of water.
- Wash off the juice or pollen of the plant from the skin or mucous membrane with running water without smearing it on the surface, do not rub the place of contact with the juice, pollen, plant residues with your hands.
- Do not use any medicines as disinfection - they can catalyze a chemical reaction when combined with the substances that make up the plant.
- If the victim is unconscious, do not carry out any manipulations to induce vomiting, bring him to his senses by the usual methods: patting on the cheeks, ammonia.
- Give the plant itself or its remains to the doctor for analysis for toxins and the choice of detoxification methods of treatment.
