Stress ulcers - causes and prevention.
Stress ulcers are violations of the integrity of the mucous membrane lining the walls of the stomach and intestines as a result of stress:
- nervous (change in acid - alkaline environment, release of enzymes),
- mechanical (injury as a result of injury, surgery),
- chemical (burns and injuries by chemical reagents or aggressive substances, as part of medicines),
- heat (burns with food or liquids),
- infectious (viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, parasites).
Any kind of stress factor destroys the membranes of the cells of the mucous layer, creating the prerequisites for the development of inflammation, erosion and necrosis of the cells of the mucous membrane.
An increase in the concentration of enzymes in the stomach and duodenum, changes in the acidic environment in the stomach inevitably lead to destruction of the mucous layer.
The most common locations for stress ulcers are the stomach and duodenum due to their location along the route of food components, drugs, and the penetration of infectious agents.
With the disappearance of the influence of factors causing the destruction of the mucous layer, stress ulcers heal quickly. But if the effect of stress factors is methodically repeated, it can lead to bleeding, which can be fatal.
To prevent the occurrence of stress ulcers, special protective substances are used - antacids, which, when taken orally, envelop the walls of the gastrointestinal tract and prevent the aggressive effects of stress factors.
