Papillomas in the larynx.
Papillomatosis is the name of a disease in which papillomas, outgrowths similar to papillae, begin to develop from the epithelium of the mucous membrane and skin. Papillomatosis is focal and diffuse (large spatial areas of the mucosa are affected.
Papillomas in the larynx can be located on the mucous membrane of the larynx itself, as well as on the adjacent areas of the mucous membrane, affecting the mucous layer of the palate, palatine tonsils, vocal cords, and also affect the mucous membrane of the cheeks, lips, and palatine fornix.
The disease in its pathogenesis has scientifically proven causes of occurrence: viral origin and androgenic dependence, as it is observed in male patients. The disease of papilloma of the larynx begins to manifest itself in early childhood, sometimes congenital, much less often in adulthood. The disease of papillomatosis of the larynx is chronic and recurrent.
Signs of papillomas in the larynx:
- since papillomas are tumors with a benign course, they resemble outgrowths on the surface of the mucous membrane in pink or red color;
- sometimes the proliferation of papillomas leads to a narrowing of the larynx, which causes a number of symptoms, which are initially paid attention to: difficulty breathing;
- change in the sound of the voice up to its absence (hoarseness);
- in difficult cases, serious violations of the respiratory function are possible;
- the size of the papillomas of the larynx can vary from a grain of millet to a pea.
Diagnosis of papillomatosis of the larynx is carried out on the basis of a study of the material taken during a biopsy, an X-ray of the larynx, bronchi and lungs.
Differentiation is carried out with diseases such as false croup, diphtheria, foreign body in the throat. The papillomas of the larynx, which have a whitish appearance and increased keratinization, are carefully examined, since a pattern was revealed in the development of malignant processes (malignancy) of this type of papillomas.
Treatment of papillomas of the larynx is carried out surgically and conservatively. Large-sized papillomas, which interfere with breathing and speech formation, are surgically removed. Along with this, drug therapy is carried out to reduce proliferative processes and prevent malignancy of papillomas, and the level of androgen hormones is also corrected. In the conservative treatment of laryngeal papillomatosis, radiation therapy is used.
Treatment is considered to be effective in reducing relapse rates.
