Preparations - derivatives.
In medical terminology, the word "derivative" is often found. What does derivative mean in medicine? The semantic meaning of a derivative is to be produced from any previous product, property, substance, component and the like.
In medical practice, the term "derivative" is used when they want to emphasize the secondary origin of a substance or component. For example, a hormone derivative is a substance derived from a real hormone that has been processed, refined and processed for its intended use.
The pharmaceutical industry produces a variety of derivatives, which can be drugs, or simply biologically active additives containing a processed chemical component in their composition. During processing, the primary medicinal component can lose partially or completely its original medicinal properties and turn from a medicinal component into an ineffective drug. These kinds of pharmaceuticals are labeled as dietary supplements.
But in pharmacology, there are derivatives of drugs that have a successful effect on diseases. Such derivatives form a line of medicinal products of several generations. For example, the antibiotic penicillin forms a series (pharmacological groups) of new generation antibacterial drugs that bear other names (amoxicillin, ampicillin, benzylpenicillin, oxacillin, carbenicillin, etc.).
Medicines – derivatives are produced in order to improve the properties of the primary substance:
- expanding the spectrum of its impact,
- adding properties allowing the parent substance to be used in the form of injection, inhalation, oral administration, vaginal administration, rectal administration, transdermal (transdermal) administration, sublingual administration (under the tongue), buccal administration (on the cheek),
- combining the original substance with other medicinal components for complex effects.
There are a number of non-medicinal chemicals, the derivatives of which can acquire significant medicinal properties.
The instructions for a pharmaceutical product - a derivative indicate the primary substance from which the drug was produced. For these purposes, it is mentioned that this drug is a derivative of another drug or produced on its basis.
