Increased drowsiness.
The inability to get enough sleep is an eternal human problem. Getting up early, a long working day, a lot of current household chores do not give you the opportunity to sleep as much as you would like. Insufficient sleep inhibits thought processes, causes weakness, constant drowsiness. But drowsiness is not always a sign of lack of sleep! There are many pathological conditions that, developing imperceptibly for a person, cause a feeling of constant drowsiness. How not to miss the onset of the disease, a symptom of which may be increased drowsiness ?
Drowsiness is a sign of oppression of the work (decrease in functions) of the central nervous system. Normal healthy sleepiness is caused by the hormone melatonin, which begins to be produced in the dark or at the time of artificial blackout. Its production is closely related to the work of the visual apparatus, or rather the receptors that capture the flow of light. But in addition to melatonin, the functions of the central nervous system can be reduced:
- Allergens with an allergic reaction that develops, which can lead to a coma (with the introduction of drugs or painkillers);
- Brain trauma: hematomas, edema, concussions;
- An abscess or brain tumor;
- Hypoxia of the brain (oxygen starvation) - can develop in a stuffy room or due to disorders in the cardiovascular and / or respiratory systems;
- Significant blood loss (with open bleeding, internal bleeding );
- Intoxication of the body with chemical reagents in case of poisoning with gases or chemical reagents, food, drugs, opiates;
- Infectious agents that have entered the body: Botulism, African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness);
- Renal failure or liver failure;
- High concentration of oxygen in the air or overdose of oxygen inhalation;
- Persistent high blood pressure overloads the brain with oxygen;
- Hypothermia (decrease in body temperature);
- Alcohol intoxication;
- Vegeto - vascular disorders;
- Asthenic syndrome;
- Various mental illnesses can cause hypersomnia - a decrease in wakefulness;
- Endocrine disorders can cause drowsiness (diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, menopause and others);
- First trimester pregnancy;
- Menstruation or premenstrual period;
- Hypotension;
- Avitaminosis and hypovitaminosis ;
- Fasting and low-calorie diets;
- Medicines (as a main or side effect);
- Violation of the circadian rhythm when moving to different time zones;
- Physical overload;
- Intelligent overload;
- Prolonged stress and nervous exhaustion;
- Reduced atmospheric pressure;
- A food intake that causes blood to flow to the stomach and decreases the flow of oxygenated blood to the brain.
When drowsiness does not occur on its own, but in combination with other signs (headache, dizziness, nausea, urge to vomit, decreased blood pressure, increased pressure, deterioration of vision), it is necessary to sound the alarm, because this kind of drowsiness can be a precursor to a coma.
