Why is erythrocyte anisocytosis dangerous?
In the blood, in certain proportions, there are always formed elements of blood - erythrocytes of various sizes (normocytes, microcytes, macrocytes and megalocytes). Normocytes occupy a larger volume than the rest of the erythrocytes (about 70% and normally should not be more). When they talk about anisocytosis of erythrocytes, then a blood test shows a quantitative violation of the proportions of altered red blood cells (not normocytes) in the direction of increasing their number. The phenomenon of anisocytosis is taken into account in the diagnosis of various kinds of diseases.
Most often, the cause of anisocytosis of erythrocytes is iron deficiency anemia, thalassemia, but cases of anisocytosis have been recorded with colds, intoxication with chemicals and in the presence of a chronic infection in the body. Some conditions of anisocytosis are attributed to myelodysplastic syndrome (the formation of abnormal red blood cells in the body) and genetic predisposition. And also anisocytosis can be one of the indicators of bone marrow oncology, diseases of the spleen, liver.
Given that erythrocytes are oxygen carriers, their failure can affect organ diseases associated with oxygen starvation (hypoxia): heart disease (insufficient oxygen supply to the myocardium), oxygen starvation of tissues of various organs, brain hypoxia, etc.
Treatment of anisocytosis of erythrocytes is carried out by taking iron preparations, vitamin B12.
