Bran - health benefits and harms.
Bran - a by-product of the production of cereals, is a hard shell of grain. Since bran do not have nutritional value as a source of calories, but, on the contrary, impede the assimilation of cereals and bakery products, from the point of view of an energy product, they have not been used. But it was noticed that the presence of bran in bread increases intestinal motility, which was the reason for their use to improve the functionality of the intestine as a natural remedy.
Why is bran good for the intestines? It's all about their rough structure and their tendency to swell, absorbing water from the intestines. This leads to the fact that the intestinal walls reflexively contract and cause an accelerated evacuation of food waste from the gastrointestinal tract, do not allow feces to linger in the intestinal lumen and thereby prevent the formation of fecal stones and constipation.
But there is also a downside to this process, which makes bran harmful. This is due to the fact that all diseases of the gastrointestinal tract to one degree or another cause inflammatory processes in the mucous membrane lining the intestinal wall from the inside. And if the treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract involves the use of anti-inflammatory drugs, adherence to a sparing diet, then the bran will serve as an additional irritating factor that disrupts the effectiveness of such treatment.
strong>The benefits and harms of bran are determined by the state of health of a particular person and the presence in his history of diseases of the stomach or intestines. Colitis, gastritis, Crohn disease, stomach and intestinal ulcers, intestinal polyps - this is an incomplete list of diseases in which bran is contraindicated for use in food. For this reason, the so popular bran diets or the passion for baked goods that include bran should be justified by the effectiveness of the bran consumption, and not their harmfulness.
