Artificial meat - what is it?
Problems of promising animal husbandry made scientists think about whether it is possible to grow muscle tissue in laboratory conditions, which in turn would solve the problems of animal husbandry, which is constantly faced with limited resources such as fresh water and pastures for raising livestock for meat breeds, poultry and fish products.
Experiments were conducted by NASA in 2001 as part of a study of the possibilities of growing turkey muscle tissue. For the first time, an article on the cultivation of artificial fabrics appeared in 2005 in a scientific journal.
What is artificial meat? These are taken biological components of the muscle tissue of a real animal (muscle tissue cells) and, under favorable conditions (nutrient medium), have grown to the multicellular structure of muscle fiber. The technology of growing muscle tissue, although complex, is nevertheless quite feasible on the scale of not only a laboratory, but also a large production.
Several companies within the startup took up this development, and already in 2013 the first artificial hamburger was created (in the opinion of experts and critics, dryish and fat-free).
Today, artificial meat is not yet present on the food market, but it is already a prospect for the further development of the meat and fish industry.
What are the dangers of cultured steak? First of all, we are talking about artificial hormones added when growing muscle tissue, because the volume of an animal's muscle tissue depends on its ability to move, which cannot be recreated when growing artificial muscle tissue. Further, one should be wary of the use of antibiotics that disinfect artificial tissues in the process of their growth.
As for the usefulness of artificial meat, there are obvious advantages over a similar product grown in natural conditions: a small amount of fat up to its complete absence, which makes it possible to use artificial meat as a product of an anti-cholesterol diet.
