What is spinal disc protrusion?
Spinal disc protrusion - means the protrusion of the disc beyond the location of the vertebrae. This pathology occurs when the spine is compressed and is the initial stage in the development of a hernia of the spine.
Degenerative changes in the tissue of the intervertebral disc lead to the fact that, instead of amortization, the disc is squeezed out when the spine is loaded. Extrusion of the disc can occur with various kinds of curvature of the spine, with heavy lifting, with unsuccessful turns and tilts.
Signs of spinal disc protrusion:
- with a slight protrusion, disc protrusion may be asymptomatic,
- there is a painful symptom during compression of the root,
- there may be numbness of body parts, goose bumps, tingling,
- radiating pain from the spine to the peripheral parts,
- pain syndrome can mimic the pain of internal organs,
- pain symptoms are given to nearby organs and tissues, depending on the location of the protrusion (spine: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral).
For diagnostics, X-ray, MRI, electroneuromyography are used.
Treatment of intervertebral protrusion is carried out conservatively with the elimination of the load on the spinal column, traction of the spine, the use of anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs. The patient is advised to control the position of the spine, try to keep it in the correct position, and use support bands. With improper treatment and non-observance of the recommended measures protecting the spine, the protrusion of the spinal disc develops into a more complex condition that requires surgical intervention - an intervertebral hernia.
