Syringomyelia.
Syringomyelia is a progressive disease of the spinal cord tissue, as a result of which cavities are formed in the spinal cord against the background of proliferation of glial cells. Usually the disease is congenital and equates to congenital anomalies, but there are cases of syringomyelia resulting from spinal cord injury.
Typical signs of syringomyelia:
- Sensory disorders - superficial violation of temperature and pain sensitivity with its preservation in the deeper layers of tissues (develops over time in the later stages of the disease).
- Trophic disorders affect the condition of the skin, joints, bone tissue and are accompanied by circulatory disorders (cyanosis), increased keratinization, bone fractures, deformation of bone structures, rarefaction and decrease in bone tissue. A person has problems with tissue regeneration, scarring of wounds occurs, bones in the area of the hand of the phalanges of the fingers thicken.
- Paresis develops as a result of damage to the peripheral motor neurons of the anterior horns of the spinal cord. Violations are accompanied by a decrease in muscle tone, atrophy of the muscle tissue of the cervical and thoracic regions, upper limbs. There are paresis of the muscles of the pharynx, tongue, soft palate.
Treatment of syringomyelia is associated with the protection of areas of the body with impaired sensitivity from accidental injuries and burns. For painful symptoms, antipsychotics and analgesics are prescribed. To improve the conductivity of neuromuscular fibers, Proserin is prescribed.
With an increase in paresis of the lower and upper extremities, an operation on the spine is performed, during which the decompression of the spinal cord is eliminated, adhesions are removed and the cavities are drained.
