Paraffin baths at home.
One of the methods of physiotherapy - paraffin therapy, it is quite possible to carry out at home. But not everyone knows the possibilities of paraffin, its practical use for physiotherapy and contraindications for the use of paraffin baths.
Paraffin is one of the products of oil refining, chemically inert, but soluble in organic solvents, being in a liquid state, it mixes well with substances of oily consistency. Paraffin has a high heat capacity, and it is this property that allows it to be used for thermal effects on surface tissues. Slowly cooling down, the paraffin decreases in volume, which creates compression of tissues, and its elasticity allows this compression to be made gentle.
The thermal and compression effect on the body tissues stimulates the microcirculation of blood and lymph, providing a nourishing and anti-inflammatory effect. Paraffin therapy actually stimulates tissue regeneration.
Paraffin baths and applications are used to relieve painful effects and swelling in joint diseases, to stimulate hair growth in case of baldness, during remission in certain skin diseases, at the stages of healing of skin injuries.
There are contraindications to paraffin baths:
- Acute and chronic infections (including skin infections);
- Acute inflammation and purulent processes;
- Diseases in the acute period;
- Open wounds;
- Rash;
- Skin diseases in the acute stage;
- Rosacea;
- Hypertrichosis;
- Sunburn;
- Telangiectasia and a tendency to vasodilatation;
- Thrombophlebitis;
- Oncology.
How to make paraffin baths at home?
For paraffin therapy, medical paraffin is used, which has a low melting point (up to 50 in Celsius). The paraffin is heated in a water bath, bringing it to 70 - 100 in Celsius. For reuse, the paraffin is heated to 120 in Celsius, thus disinfecting it. The surface of the skin must be dried before applying the layers of paraffin, otherwise a burn is possible. The container is filled with paraffin heated to the required temperature, the limbs are lowered into it and kept until the paraffin cools down, then the paraffin layer is carefully cleaned off.
Paraffin applications can be done in two ways: immerse the tissue in liquid paraffin and apply to the problem area of the skin (wrap the problem area of the body), or apply paraffin layer by layer (with a spatula, spray) on the area of the skin that requires warming up. Paraffin heating temperature is selected individually. Paraffin therapy is carried out in courses of 1-3 weeks for an hour a day. If necessary, liquid paraffin is mixed with oils.
