Bezoar - what is it?
Sometimes, due to bad habits or enzymatic insufficiency of the stomach, a clot (lump) of dense substance is formed in its lumen, consisting of the remnants of undigested food, hair (with the habit of chewing and swallowing hair) or components of medicines that have not undergone fermentation. This lump is called a bezoar.
Bezoar can be detected accidentally by X-ray, ultrasound or computed tomography of the gastrointestinal tract.
Signs of the presence of bezoar in the stomach can be manifested by a feeling of fullness in the stomach, nausea, urge to vomit, and sometimes bleeding when the walls of the stomach are injured. In critical cases, bezoar can block the exit of their stomach.
If a bezoar is found and painful inconvenience is caused by its existence, it is removed using an endoscope, after crushing it into smaller pieces with the help of endoscopic forceps, clamps, a metal loop, with the help of forced enhancement of peristalsis with medications or a laparoscopic method if it is impossible to reduce the size of the bezoar.
Before removing the bezoar, the composition of the bezoar is diagnosed. This is done with a twofold purpose: to identify the possibility of non-surgical removal of bezoar (for example, by fermentation) or to carry out differential diagnostics with tumor formations similar in appearance.
The prognosis for bezoar removal is usually good.
