Oneyroid - what is it?
Oneyroid is a clouding of consciousness in which a person is visited by fantastic dreams, woven into real life and replacing reality for a person. Oneyroid is a symptom that often accompanies a number of diseases: schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, alcoholism, substance abuse, drug intoxication, psychosis, delirium, trauma or brain disease.
Regardless of the cause that gave rise to the oneiroid, this condition can be dangerous both for the patient himself and for the people around him. There are several forms of manifestation of oneyroid: dreamlike (when a person is completely immersed in the world created by the imagination) and fantastically illusory (when a person lives in the real world, the events of which are mixed with fantasies and illusions).
Fantastic and illusory pictures with oneiroid can be frightening, romantic or fabulous, depending on which the patient may feel danger, experience nervous excitement, joy or pleasure.
Oneyroid signs:
The oneyroid develops in stages. At first, the emotional background of a person is disturbed (from several weeks to several months), then a delusional state develops (from several hours to several days), then the symptoms of the disease weaken and gradually disappear.
With oneiroid, the patient's mood is unstable, both an increase and a decrease in mood can be observed. Perhaps the development of insomnia, alternating with sleep, which is accompanied by colorful dreams.
The delusional state is accompanied by thoughts of persecution and death. Further, a delusional state develops, called "twin syndrome": a positive twin syndrome, when a stranger seems familiar to a person, or a negative twin syndrome, when a person thinks that his loved ones or himself have been replaced by a double.
In the future, fantasies and illusions begin to take out real events, filling the patient's life. At the same time, contact with the real world can be maintained or lost.
Oneyroid is diagnosed on the basis of clinical manifestations and observations of the relatives surrounding the patient. Treatment of oneyroid depends on the reasons that gave rise to it. The main emphasis is on the treatment of diseases or intoxications that caused the development of oneyroid.
