Is weight lifting dangerous?
Any strength training involves not only stretching exercises, but also lifting weights (barbells), the so-called deadlift. This puts stress on the back muscles, abs, and spine. When lifting weights, the diaphragm is activated, which, bending, presses on the internal organs. With untrained muscles, internal organs can shift or wander within the abdominal cavity.
The spinal column is stressed when lifting weights. With an adequate load, the structures of the spine (vertebrae, intervertebral discs connected by joints) amortize, and traumatic compression of the intervertebral space does not occur.
But with untrained back muscles, incorrect position of the spinal column (distortions, curvatures) and inadequate load, the ligamentous apparatus of the spine is deformed, and the vertebrae infringe or may crush the intervertebral discs.
In addition to the spine and internal organs, when lifting weights, the load also falls on the blood vessels of the limbs, which can lead to varicose veins.
In women, lifting a barbell with untrained muscles can cause prolapse of the uterus and problems with pregnancy and childbirth.
The joints in the pelvic region are also a weak point in vertical loading.
Lifting weights is dangerous only in cases where the muscular frame of the body is not used to experiencing a certain level of stress on itself. But with training, the gradual accustoming of the muscles and the diaphragm to holding a certain weight, with the correct technique for performing the exercises, lifting weights is possible without injury.
There are a number of rules that precede safe weight lifting:
- warming up the muscles before the main exercise,
- getting rid of excess visceral fat (near organs), but the presence of a certain cushioning layer of fat in the abdominal cavity,
- use a weightlifter's belt to fix the abdominal organs.
