Nervous tic.
A nervous tic is a repetitive movement uncontrollable, apart from a person's desire (a type of hyperkinesis). It can manifest itself as a twitching of the facial muscles; shouting out words or sounds; twitching and involuntary movements of the muscles of the limbs.
Nervous tics can be considered as an independent symptom in reversible disorders of the nervous system, or as a result of injuries or diseases of the nervous system.
Despite the fact that the causes of a nervous tic are not fully understood, the appearance of uncontrolled movements is associated with a number of factors:
- anxiety,
- stressful condition,
- emotional outburst,
- side effects of certain drugs,
- magnesium deficiency in the body,
- increased photosensitivity of the eyes (causes a nervous tic of the eye ),
- fixed reflex movement (sniffing, convulsive swallowing, etc.).
A nervous tic, as a result of injury or illness, can develop as a result of:
- brain trauma ( concussions ,tumors, hematomas, etc.),
- damage to the nervous system (for example, as a result of neuritis of the facial nerve , multiple sclerosis),
- suffered a stroke,
- encephalitis or other infectious diseases,
- diseases: chorea, torsion dystonia, Parkinson's disease, Tourette's syndrome, Bell's palsy and others.
For effective treatment, the diagnosis of nervous tics is required in order to differentiate organic disorders of the nervous system, mental diseases in which the treatment of a nervous tic presents certain difficulties. With a nervous tic , as one of the symptoms of the disease, the emphasis is on the treatment of the identified disease.
As an oncoming symptom, nervous tics are successfully treated. Drug therapy is usually prescribed when involuntary movements during a nervous tic interfere with a normal life, work, and cause difficulties in relationships with people.
Drug therapy includes antipsychotics, blocking muscles with Botox injections. In certain cases, physical therapy and massage of twitching muscles help.
If sometimes minor twitching of the muscles (not chronic) is observed, then it makes sense to simply switch attention to some business, do physical exercises, massage the twitching muscle, take a relaxing bath, learn to relax the muscles of the part of the body where the twitching occurs in order to get distracted from the annoying ones. unpleasant sensations, and the nervous tic will pass on its own after a while.
