Emotional lability.
An emotionally unstable state of the psyche is called emotional lability (labile - sliding, unstable). This condition refers to disorders of higher nervous activity and is characterized by a light and frequent changeable mood to the diametrically opposite, instant violent emotional reaction to any insignificant influence of the stimulus. Emotional imbalance should not be confused with bipolar disorder, in which the stimulus that triggers the mood swings is not present.
An emotionally labile person is impulsive, demonstrates negative and positive emotions with the same degree of intensity, is prone to spontaneous actions (makes rash actions), does not control himself and does not calculate the consequences of his spontaneous actions.
Emotional lability can act as an independent disease or accompany other disorders: delirium, confusion, hysteria, asthenic state, withdrawal symptoms. In addition to mental disorders, emotional lability can be the result of disturbances in the functioning of the brain during the development of painful conditions: atherosclerosis, cerebrovascular lesions, brain tumors, blood pressure disorders, hormonal disruptions, prolonged stress, nervous exhaustion.
Signs of emotional lability:
- Rapid and transient emotional reactions,
- Increased sentimentality, tearfulness,
- Frequent change of interests,
- Intolerance to other people's opinions or criticism,
- Hot temper,
- A messy life,
- Instability in relationships with people around you,
- Suggestibility, inclination to fantasy.
Treatment of emotional lability requires finding out the exact reasons for its development. If emotional lability is a consequence of other diseases, then treatment is aimed at eliminating the disease that provoked emotional instability. Attacks of emotional imbalance are extinguished by sedatives, antidepressants, and sometimes antipsychotics. The correct organization of the rest regimen, limitation of mental and physical activity, restorative therapy with vitamin and mineral complexes (in particular, the intake of B vitamins) is recommended.
