The problem of early gray hair.

The presence of gray hair always hints to a person about age, even if only one gray hair was found. But early gray hair can be unsettling. To understand the causes of early graying, it is necessary to understand the mechanism of hair graying in general. Hair, like eyes and skin, nature colors with the help of melanin, a pigment produced by the cells of the epidermis. The process of melanin production is influenced by many factors closely related to human physiology:

  • Pituitary hormones (melanocyte-stimulating hormone, adrenocorticotropic hormone, beta-lipotropic hormone);
  • The presence of lighting, in which the granules produced by melanocytes of melanin aggregate (move from a scattered state to a group state);
  • Condition and functionality of neurotransmitters, sex hormones, thyroid gland;
  • Congenital diseases associated with a lack of melanin (leukotrichia, albinism);
  • Physiological aging of the body, in which pigment production decreases or completely disappears due to the aging of cells - melanocytes;
  • Prolonged stresses or deep nervous shocks, causing disruption of the melanin binding chains with the protein structures of the hair;
  • Medicines, the structure of which includes substances that disrupt the biochemical processes of melanin production (drugs for chemotherapy, for the treatment of parkinsonism);
  • Avitaminosis and hypovitaminosis of vitamins A, B, D;
  • Lack of trace elements: iron, zinc, selenium, copper;
  • Diets poor in protein structures;
  • Excess UV, radiation.

The problem of gray hair is associated not only with a change in color, but also with a change in the quality characteristics of the hair. With the disappearance of melanin, the hair becomes porous, low elastic, more fragile and thinner, losing its natural shine. Dyeing gray hair also becomes a problem, since not all dyes evenly fall on gray hair and imperfectly convey the shade required for dyeing. The best results are obtained with natural dyes (basma, henna), high-quality chemical dyes (cheap and low-quality ones will only emphasize the problem) or methods of toning individual strands to camouflage gray strands. Gray hair is more likely to fall out, so the shock of gray hair is thinning. Perms cause much more damage to gray hair than pigmented hair.

It is believed that it is impossible to return gray hair to its previous shade, but it is possible to slow down the graying process if it is associated with the development of diseases that are curable or is the result of diet, lack of vitamins, reduced amounts of trace elements or prolonged stress. Therefore, when early gray hair appears, you should pay attention to the diet, take tests to detect hypovitaminosis and / or lack of micronutrients, conduct an examination with an endocrinologist for the level of hormones, stop being nervous for any reason. If it turns out that the graying process cannot be stopped due to certain circumstances beyond the control of man and medicine, then cosmetology, a hairdresser and the achievements of the chemical industry in the production of dyes for hair can always be called for help.
