Dysmorphism - what is it?
It has always been considered that health is a comfortable state of the body, when all its functional capabilities are carried out properly. But sometimes not physical, but psychological problems can introduce a completely healthy organism into a state bordering on death. This happens with people suffering from dysmorphism - rejection of their own appearance.
In medicine dysmorphism means the disproportionate development of organs, but in relation to the practice of mental deviations, this term is most often used in cases where a person is maniacally striving for ideal body proportions and cannot come to terms with the results already achieved. Ideal proportions of the body exist only in its own dimension and are estimated by it subjectively.
Dysmorphism can manifest itself to varying degrees - from simple complexes about some external data and ending with complete displeasure from contemplating one's own appearance. Such a person looks in the mirror and hates his appearance, believes that he is not well-built enough, that he eats a lot and does little sports to form a beautiful body. And such people are not just critics of their appearance - they are fighting with him for life and death.
Almost every female person seeks to correct something in her own appearance in order to achieve the level of ideal proportions imposed by the beauty industry. But the natural desire to improve their own appearance in women suffering from dysmorphism acquires the scale of violence against the body - malnutrition, bulimia, anorexia, training to exhaustion.
Men suffer from dysmorphism at least as often as women, and this condition manifests itself in them in a loss of control over muscle growth. Training and nutrition for muscle growth is driven to the point of absurdity, which is reflected in a condition such as bigorexia. Muscle building becomes catastrophic, but a person does not stop there and continues to stubbornly move in one direction, which results in illness and disability.
Dysmorphism in its mental aspect is difficult to identify, since a person can hide rejection of his own appearance, fight it alone. Usually, disorders of this kind are detected indirectly by observation from the outside, with a careful study of the person's nutritional process (whether he is fixated on the number of calories absorbed and calories excreted in feces, whether he suffers from bulimia) and his weight parameters (such people control their weight too much), with a constant change in body proportions by means of plastics.
Treatment of dysmorphism as a mental pathology is carried out, like the treatment of any mental disorder - with the participation of a psychiatrist. Given the fact that dysmorphism is associated with a psychologically distorted mood of a person to improve his appearance, psychotherapy sessions are conducted with such people, they seek to reach out to their darkened consciousness and call for logic. But more often than not, there is no way to do without antidepressants and other medications that extinguish inadequate activity in relation to your body.
