How to develop willpower?
To achieve high results in life, you must apply perseverance in achieving your goals. But a person is inclined to get tired of continuous stress (physical or mental), and at the slightest hint of fatigue, he is drawn to relax, to postpone difficult tasks for a while, to switch his attention to more pleasant activities than an intense movement towards his chosen, but still distant goal.
In such cases, willpower comes to the rescue - a kind of reserve mechanism that turns on at the very moments when you want to give up everything and indulge in rest and entertainment. Willpower is inherent in humans, but not in animals, since it is firmly connected with self-awareness and the ability of a person to assess not only the surrounding reality, but also himself: his abilities, his desires, his capabilities and his preferences.
Not all people have willpower, but only those who can consciously manage their character and desires. But there are many people who want to cultivate willpower in themselves, to develop it.
How to develop willpower, if until now a person has not tried to use it, but let everything take its course under the motto: "If I can - it means I can, but if I cannot, it is not necessary?"
Willpower implies firmness of character and the ability of a person to endure some hardship at the expense of future achievements that he could imagine. If there is no imagination, and a person is not able to model his future desired life, then there will be no incentive to achieve the goal, and there is no incentive - there is no desire to achieve the goal!
Therefore, in order to develop willpower, it is necessary to have an incentive - a clearly presented or described by the person himself the reason for his interest in future achievements. The incentive should be so attractive that you want to postpone many things in the name of fulfilling your plans.
To prevent your goals from appearing unattainable, you should not strive for potentially unattainable peaks. And here common sense is needed, that is, a person must assess his abilities, capabilities and decide whether he has a chance to achieve his plan. If there is at least one chance, you can start moving towards the goal, if there is no chance, change the goal to a more accessible one.
Starting his way to the goal, any person will meet many temptations that will begin to distract his thoughts, take time, it is at such moments that willpower is needed, which will not allow him to turn off the intended path, waste time and be left with nothing (or with anything something else, but not related to the goal).
When you feel that the temptations are so great that they do not allow you to focus on the global task at hand, stop and prioritize what you need in life and what you can sacrifice. Of course, loved ones, their life and health do not sacrifice goals, and sometimes you have to deviate from the plans for the sake of family, parents or friends, but this does not mean that the goal is lost. The movement towards it can be continued after solving the current everyday problems.
Do not forget that achieving a goal is always a path with a set of difficulties, and all of them will have to be overcome in order to achieve what you intended (like in a computer game - until you pass all the levels - you will not reach the final, because there are usually no workarounds).
Man is a creature with spontaneous desires, and only one who was able to restrain himself from many spontaneous desires, abandon them in the present in the hope of getting what he wants in the future, can boast of willpower.
For example:
- If you love watching TV, do exercise machines instead;
- Food lover - start learning a foreign language to distract yourself from thinking about food;
- Love to be lazy and mess around - choose a list of small things and do them systematically;
- Have bad habits - at least once do not succumb to this temptation;
- Love to quit halfway through - finish at least one so that you can praise yourself for such a small, but already achievement.
From small overcoming of one's own desires, big overcoming of difficult obstacles are formed.
Even to myself it is pleasant to admit that you know how to force yourself to switch from case to case if necessary and are able to achieve, albeit small, but already results in finished cases. But if you can demonstrate your composure, responsibility, dedication to others, then this will increase not only your self-esteem, but also your rating in the eyes of others.
It is very important, while tempering willpower, not to give up in unfortunate coincidences of circumstances and to be able to start from scratch a business that has already been brought to a certain level.
Over time, a person gets used to deny himself some entertainment and rest in the name of the business he needs, and this becomes his habit - this is how willpower is gradually tempered.
